The Oslo Rift was a highly-volcanic continental rift active from ca. 300-260 Ma, likely contemporaneous with the assembly of Gondwana. It is the northermost expression of a large region of rifting and volcanism preserved across much on northern Europe. In the forests around Oslo we find a wide variety of extrusive volcanic deposits (e.g. lava flows), intrusive magmatic rocks (dikes and plutons), and volcanically derived sediments that elucidate a history of widespread lava flows, explosive eruptions, and sedimentary environments similar to what is seen in the East African Rift today. We will visit one of the youngest records of this activity to look at exposures of volcanic and sedimentary deposits.

Most of the walking is on well formed paths and gravel roads but we will venture slightly off track to reach some exposures. In total we will likely cover 2-3km with some hills, and with a stop for lunch.
