 ring: Distributed Acoustic Sensing for Multi-Site Detection and Environmen
 tal Noise Analysis\n\nSnow avalanches pose a significant hazard in mountai
 nous areas\, particularly when they block roads\, bury vehicles\, or expos
 e traffic to successive avalanches during active periods.\n\nSince 2022\, 
 we have deployed Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) systems to monitor ava
 lanche activity along multiple road corridors in Western and Northern Norw
 ay\, covering segments up to 70 km in length. Unlike traditional detection
  systems\, which are limited to a few km segments\, the DAS-based alert sy
 stem works regardless of visibility or adverse weather.\nOur algorithm not
  only detects avalanches reaching the road and estimates the accumulated s
 now load but also registers high-up avalanches\, vehicle movements\, and a
  variety of environmental vibrations—including ocean waves\, wind\, quar
 ry blasts\, and both local and distant earthquakes.\nBuilding on the previ
 ously published Holmbuktura avalanche dataset\, we extended our analysis t
 o events farther from the road and included an assessment of environmental
  noise. We also compared data across multiple sites in Norway\, different 
 fiber cable installations (directly buried\, piped buried etc.)\, and addi
 tional instruments like infrasound stations.\nThese results highlight the 
 system’s reliability and minimal maintenance needs\, offering clear adva
 ntages over conventional approaches that are expensive\, limited in scope\
