Norsk Geofysisk Forening avd. Bergen has the pleasure of inviting you to an excursion to NorGliders’ lab in Laksevåg! The Norwegian National Facility for Ocean Gliders (NorGliders) is a research initiative at the Geophysical Institute, University of Bergen, comprising of a team of researchers and engineers who specialise in developing and deploying Ocean Gliders. These gliders are unmanned, autonomous underwater vehicles (UUV) that can move through the ocean relatively autonomously for up to 10 months at a time, collecting scientific data down to depths of 1000m. They collect high-resolution data across a variety of spatial and temporal scales, and sample key physical properties such as temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and chlorophyll concentration. The data they collect provides invaluable insights into oceanographic processes.

We will visit the lab for a tour from the NorGliders team and hear how the gliders are an integrated part of monitoring and science in the Nordic Seas. Pizza and soda will be served in the lab and afterwards, there will be a “walk-and-talk” to the nearby pub “Lyst & Fryd” for those who want to join for a glass of beer (or more soda).
To get to NorGliders’ lab on Laksevågneset, you may either walk (approx. 1 hr walk from GFI), use a bicycle, or take the bus (lines 6 or 20) direction westward to the stop “Laksevåg senter”.
If you intend to join the tour, please email Vidar Lien (vidar.lien@hi.no) asap so that food can be ordered, noting any allergies.
